Hallands Hamnar strengthens its position in the biofuel segment

Hallands Hamnar has signed a strategic agreement with the German company Bruening Group for the handling of biofuels, a segment with strong growth potential. The agreement means that Bruening Group will establish operations in the Varberg port area through a long-term lease. The partnership is seen as an initial step, in Hallands Hamnar’s long-term ambition to develop a hub for biofuels in Halland and meet the increasing demand from the energy sector.

As the demand for bio and alternative fuels to replace mineral oil and gas has significantly increased, Hallands Hamnar has actively sought strategic partnerships. Through the agreement with Bruening Group, a secure supply of goods is guaranteed, enabling reliable logistics solutions for the energy market and meeting the sector's growing needs.

The biofuels handled in this partnership come from residual products after forestry operations, wood industry by-products, and wood waste. Products include wood chips, fuelwood, pellets and bark, which energy companies use as fuel for facilities such as district heating plants. Hallands Hamnar in Varberg, Sweden’s leading forestry port, has extensive experience in efficiently handling forestry products and biofuels.

Bruening Group will establish its operations in Varberg at the beginning of 2025. The designated terminal area and quay access in Varberg create optimal conditions for growth in the biofuel segment.

- The partnership with Bruening Group strengthens our position within the biofuel segment and creates additional opportunities within energy fuel management. We see great potential in expanding our activities in this area, which will create new growth opportunities for both the port and the energy sector in the region, says Jonas Svensson, Business Manager at Hallands Hamnar.

With the port's long experience in forestry products and Varberg’s geographic advantages, including short lead times to European highways and proximity to heat and power plants in Västra Götaland and surrounding regions, Hallands Hamnar is well positioned to support the growing biofuel market and contribute to sustainable energy supply.

- The geographic location and professional collaboration with Hallands Hamnar meet all the criteria Bruening Group has been looking for. Varberg becomes a perfect puzzle piece in our Scandinavian expansion. A terminal in the port creates multiple possibilities to import or export biofuel, providing our customers with the services they need. We look forward to a long-term partnership with Hallands Hamnar, the regional heat & power plants and industry in western Sweden, comments Perry Mayr, Business Development Director for Bruening Group in Scandinavia.
